UChicago-Taiwan Student Exchange (UCTS) Fellowship

FAQ
1. Can I visit Taiwan or UChicago for more than 1 summer?

Ans: Yes, if the PI at the host institute agrees to host you for longer time. Please ask the PI to indicate the length of your stay. The fellowship only offers support for the 3 months in summer. 

 

2. How do I find a PI? What if the PI I want to work with is not on the list?

Ans: If you are unsure who you would like to work with, we suggest you consult the researchers or the department chair at your home institute. They might have good suggestions for you. Please initiate the contact with the PI yourself. You can also contact PIs who are not on the list and let him/her know about our program. 

 

3. (For UChicago students) Can I earn the Global Honor points from the trip to Taiwan?

Ans: Yes, at least 2 points. 

 

4. What are the direct flights between Chicago and Taiwan? 

Ans: Eva airline offers non-stop service between ORD and TPE. 

 

5. (For UChicago students) How should I apply for the support for my trip to Taiwan?

Ans: Please find the link to the application portal under the Apply tab or contact the university representatives below. Please also see the slides from the 11/20/2023 meeting under News.

 

6. (For UChicago students) Do I get the chance to join the local language program in Taiwan?

Ans: Almost all universities in Taiwan we know offer mandarin classes for international students. Please contact the university that you plan to work with. 

 

7. Do I need to be a senior undergraduate student to apply for the program?

Ans: The program is open to undergradautes in all years as well as master and Ph.D. students. The only constraint is that during your visit, you should maintain your student status at the home institute. 

 

8. (For Taiwan students) Are the arrival and departure dates flexible?

Ans: Yes, please discuss with the host institute PI on the dates of arrival and departure. Note that the fellowship only covers the summer quarter (6/10-9/29/2024). If your stay goes beyond the summer quarter, you need to pay for the tuition and fees for the additional quarters. 

 

9. (For Taiwan students) Should I apply for UCTS fellowship and NDVS program at the same time?

Ans: Please apply for the fellowship first, which covers tuition, fees and housing. After getting the fellowship, you apply for the NDVS program in order to enroll as a summer student at UChicago and obtain visa document. Without the fellowship, you will have to pay the full tuition, fees and find your own housing. 

 

10. (For Taiwan students) What kind of English ability test is required for the NDVS program. 

Ans: Yes, please discuss with the host institute PI on the dates of arrival and departure. Note that the fellowship only covers the summer quarter (6/10-9/29/2024). If your stay goes beyond the summer quarter, you need to pay for the tuition and fees for the additional quarters.
